Seamless Steel Pipe Size Chart Explained: NPS, OD, Schedule and Wall Thickness

Seamless steel pipe sizes are commonly described by Nominal Pipe Size, outside diameter and schedule. These terms are related, but they do not mean the same thing. Misunderstanding them can result in an incorrect wall thickness, incompatible fittings, insufficient internal flow area or an inaccurate quotation.

This guide explains how NPS, DN, OD, wall thickness, inside diameter and pipe schedule work together. It also includes representative size tables, metric and imperial ordering examples, and an RFQ checklist for buyers.

The dimensions shown below are for preliminary selection and educational comparison. Buyers must verify the applicable product standard, dimensional standard, material grade and contract edition before placing an order.

Pipe Size Terms Buyers Must Distinguish

Before comparing quotations from steel pipe manufacturers, procurement and engineering teams should use the same dimensional terminology. The following terms describe different aspects of a seamless pipe.

Nominal Pipe Size

Nominal Pipe Size, abbreviated as NPS, is a standardized pipe size designation used in imperial-based piping systems. It identifies a size category, but for most smaller pipe sizes it is not the actual measured outside diameter or inside diameter.

For example, NPS 2 pipe does not have an outside diameter of 2 inches. Its standardized outside diameter is approximately 2.375 inches, or 60.3 millimetres.

Nominal Diameter

Nominal Diameter, abbreviated as DN, is the metric nominal designation commonly paired with NPS. DN is normally written as a whole number without “mm” after it because it represents a nominal category rather than an exact measured diameter.

For example, NPS 2 generally corresponds to DN 50. This does not mean the actual OD is 50 mm. The standardized outside diameter is approximately 60.3 mm.

Outside Diameter

Outside diameter, abbreviated as OD, is the distance across the external surface of the pipe. For a given NPS, the specified outside diameter usually remains constant across different schedules.

This fixed OD allows pipes with different wall thicknesses to connect to compatible fittings, flanges and other piping components designed for the same nominal size.

Wall Thickness

Wall thickness, abbreviated as WT, is the thickness of the pipe wall. It may be specified directly in millimetres or inches, or indirectly through a schedule designation.

Actual supplied wall thickness is subject to the tolerances defined by the applicable material and dimensional standards. Therefore, the nominal wall thickness in a table should not be treated as a guaranteed minimum actual measurement unless the purchase specification clearly requires it.

Inside Diameter

Inside diameter, abbreviated as ID, is the diameter of the internal flow passage. It can be estimated from the outside diameter and nominal wall thickness:

Approximate ID = OD − (2 × nominal wall thickness)

The calculated value is nominal. Actual inside diameter can vary because of permitted OD and wall-thickness tolerances. If the application requires a controlled bore, the buyer should specify the required ID and tolerance rather than relying only on a calculated value.

Pipe Schedule

A pipe schedule is a standardized designation associated with wall thickness. Common examples include Schedule 10, Schedule 40, Schedule 80 and Schedule 160. Stainless steel piping may also use designations such as 5S, 10S, 40S and 80S.

A schedule number is not a direct wall-thickness measurement. Schedule 40 does not mean the pipe has a 40 mm or 0.40-inch wall. The corresponding wall thickness must be found in the applicable dimensional table for the selected NPS.

How NPS Relates to Outside Diameter

For NPS 1/8 through NPS 12, the nominal size normally differs from the actual outside diameter. Beginning at NPS 14, the NPS number generally matches the outside diameter expressed in inches. For example, NPS 14 pipe has an outside diameter of approximately 14 inches.

These relationships explain why an inquiry containing only a DN or NPS designation is incomplete. The buyer must also identify the schedule or required wall thickness.

Why Outside Diameter Usually Remains Constant

Within the same NPS, changing the schedule normally changes the wall thickness toward the inside of the pipe while the standardized outside diameter remains unchanged.

Consider an NPS 4 pipe:

  • The nominal outside diameter is approximately 4.500 inches, or 114.3 mm.

  • Schedule 40 has a nominal wall thickness of approximately 0.237 inches, or 6.02 mm.

  • Schedule 80 has a nominal wall thickness of approximately 0.337 inches, or 8.56 mm.

  • Both schedules retain the same nominal OD, but Schedule 80 has a smaller internal flow diameter.

How Schedule Changes Wall Thickness and Inside Diameter

A higher schedule generally indicates a thicker wall for the same NPS, although buyers should always check the applicable dimensional table instead of selecting a wall thickness based on the schedule number alone.

Increasing wall thickness reduces the inside diameter when the outside diameter remains fixed. This can influence:

  • Internal flow area

  • Fluid velocity

  • Pressure drop

  • Pipe weight

  • Material and transportation cost

  • Allowable pressure under the applicable design code

  • Machining, bending and welding requirements

Schedule alone does not determine whether a pipe is suitable for a particular operating pressure. Engineering selection must also consider material strength, temperature, corrosion allowance, manufacturing tolerance, joint design and the governing piping code.

Carbon and Alloy Steel Schedule Tables

Dimensions for carbon and alloy steel pipe are commonly selected using ASME B36.10M or the dimensional requirements referenced by the applicable material specification.

Stainless Steel Schedule Tables

Stainless steel piping commonly uses ASME B36.19M dimensions, including schedule designations containing the suffix “S.” A stainless schedule such as 10S should not automatically be assumed to have the same wall thickness as Schedule 10 in every size.

The purchase order should identify the dimensional standard rather than stating only “Schedule 10” or “Schedule 40.”

The following table compares representative Schedule 40 and Schedule 80 dimensions. Inside diameters are calculated from nominal OD and nominal wall thickness and are rounded for convenient comparison.

This is not a complete manufacturing range or contractual dimensional table. Availability can depend on material grade, production method, mill capability and order quantity.

How to Read the Size Chart

If a buyer selects NPS 6 Schedule 40, the nominal OD is approximately 168.3 mm and the nominal wall thickness is approximately 7.11 mm. The calculated nominal ID is:

168.3 − (2 × 7.11) = 154.08 mm

If the same NPS 6 pipe changes to Schedule 80, the OD remains approximately 168.3 mm, but the nominal wall increases to approximately 10.97 mm:

168.3 − (2 × 10.97) = 146.36 mm

Schedule 80 therefore has a smaller internal diameter and more material per unit length than Schedule 40 in this example.

Do Not Confuse Pipe and Tube Dimensioning

Pipe is frequently ordered by NPS or DN plus schedule. Tube is more commonly described by its actual outside diameter and wall thickness, such as 50.8 mm OD × 3.0 mm WT.

However, OD × WT may also appear in a pipe inquiry when exact metric dimensions are needed. In that case, the applicable pipe standard, grade, tolerances and manufacturing requirements must still be stated. Buyers should not assume that a tube dimension automatically has a matching pipe schedule.

Metric and Imperial Ordering Examples

A complete order description should allow the supplier to identify the material, size, manufacturing requirements and quantity without making avoidable assumptions.

Example 1: Carbon Steel Pipe Ordered by NPS and Schedule

ASTM A106 Grade B seamless carbon steel pipe, NPS 4, Schedule 80, ASME B36.10M dimensions, 6-metre fixed lengths, beveled ends, quantity 120 pieces.

  • NPS: 4

  • Nominal OD: approximately 114.3 mm

  • Nominal wall thickness: approximately 8.56 mm

  • Approximate nominal ID: 97.2 mm

Example 2: Stainless Steel Pipe Ordered with an “S” Schedule

ASTM A312 TP316L seamless stainless steel pipe, NPS 2, Schedule 10S, ASME B36.19M dimensions, random lengths, pickled and passivated surface, quantity 2,500 kg.

This description identifies the stainless material specification and the dimensional standard. It avoids the ambiguity of requesting only “2-inch stainless seamless pipe.”

Example 3: Pipe Ordered by Metric OD and Wall Thickness

Seamless alloy steel pipe, specified grade and material standard, 114.3 mm OD × 6.02 mm nominal wall thickness, OD and WT tolerances according to the stated specification, 5,800 mm fixed length, quantity 8 metric tons.

When ordering by OD and wall thickness, buyers should still state whether the dimensions correspond to a recognized schedule and which dimensional tolerances apply.

Converting Millimetres and Inches

The standard mathematical relationship is:

  • 1 inch = 25.4 mm

  • Millimetres = inches × 25.4

  • Inches = millimetres ÷ 25.4

For example, 4.500 inches × 25.4 equals 114.3 mm. Conversion should not be used to redefine a nominal pipe size. NPS 4 remains a nominal designation even though its actual OD is 4.500 inches.

Avoid excessive rounding in purchase specifications. A converted dimension of 168.275 mm may be shown as 168.3 mm in a standard table, but the applicable standard and its tolerances determine the contractual requirement.

Four Dimensional Checks Before Issuing the Purchase Order

  1. Confirm that NPS or DN matches the intended OD.        Do not assume that the nominal number is the measured diameter.

  2. Confirm the schedule against the correct dimensional standard.        Carbon, alloy and stainless piping may reference different schedule tables.

  3. Confirm whether wall thickness is nominal or minimum.        A minimum-wall requirement can affect production, inspection and price.

  4. Confirm the effect of wall thickness on ID.        Verify that the remaining bore satisfies the hydraulic and process design.

Frequently Asked Questions About Seamless Steel Pipe Dimensions

Is NPS the actual outside diameter?

Not usually for pipe sizes from NPS 1/8 through NPS 12. For example, NPS 2 has a standardized OD of approximately 2.375 inches rather than 2 inches. For NPS 14 and larger, the NPS number generally corresponds numerically to the OD in inches.

Is DN the actual pipe diameter in millimetres?

No. DN is a metric nominal designation. DN 50 commonly corresponds to NPS 2 pipe, which has an actual standardized OD of approximately 60.3 mm.

How do I convert millimetres to inches?

Divide the millimetre value by 25.4. To convert inches to millimetres, multiply by 25.4. Keep in mind that converting an actual dimension does not change the standardized NPS or DN designation.

Does a higher pipe schedule always mean a thicker wall?

For the same nominal size and dimensional series, a higher schedule generally indicates a thicker wall. However, buyers should verify the exact wall thickness in the applicable standard because schedules are not direct measurements and not every schedule is available for every size.

Does the outside diameter change when the schedule changes?

The standardized outside diameter normally remains the same for a given NPS. Increasing the schedule increases the wall thickness inward, reducing the inside diameter.

Can I calculate the exact inside diameter from OD and wall thickness?

The formula OD minus twice the wall thickness provides a nominal or approximate ID. The actual ID may vary because OD and wall thickness are subject to manufacturing tolerances. Specify a controlled ID and tolerance if the application requires an exact bore.

What is the difference between Schedule 40 and Schedule 40S?

Schedule 40S is associated with stainless steel dimensional tables, while Schedule 40 is commonly associated with carbon and alloy steel pipe tables. Some dimensions may be the same, but equivalence should not be assumed across all sizes. State the dimensional standard in the RFQ.

Which dimensions must appear on a seamless pipe RFQ?

At minimum, include NPS or OD, schedule or wall thickness, applicable dimensional standard, length and quantity. Add OD, WT, ID, straightness, ovality and length tolerances where the standard tolerances do not satisfy the application.

Should seamless pipe be ordered by NPS × schedule or OD × WT?

Use the format recognized by the applicable material and dimensional standards. Process piping is often ordered by NPS and schedule, while specialized metric products may be ordered by OD and wall thickness. In either case, include the grade, standard and tolerances.

Specify More Than a Nominal Pipe Size

A reliable seamless pipe inquiry should connect six key elements: NPS or DN, outside diameter, schedule, wall thickness, inside diameter and the applicable dimensional standard.

NPS and DN identify nominal size categories. OD is the external measurement. Schedule indicates a standardized nominal wall thickness, while wall thickness determines the approximate ID when OD remains fixed.

Providing these details helps the manufacturer evaluate production feasibility, calculate weight, confirm testing capability and prepare an accurate quotation without relying on assumptions.
